Mining One is ranked within the world’s sixth largest mining consulting firms and has over 65 experienced professionals worldwide. They are an employee owned, independent group of mining, geotechnical, geological, and hydrogeological consultants offering strategic, hands-on practical design and implementation. Mining One has completed work in Australia and many countries/continents including extensive experience in Indonesia, Africa, South America, China, PNG, Laos, and the Philippines.

The Challenge

Mining One faced a significant setback when their former Managed Service Provider (MSP) abruptly closed, leaving their operations without a business continuity plan and therfore vulnerable to potential data breaches. With no MSP support, they found themselves without a robust business continuity plan, making it challenging to respond effectively.

In order to significantly reduce downtime during an unforeseen event, a business continuity plan enables operations to:

  • Rebound without crucial disruptions to productivity.
  • Safeguard the company's reputation by mitigating risks.
  • Minimise adverse effects.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations.

During the audit process, Systima also found numerous failings on behalf of their previous IT provider including:

  • No password complexity.
  • Lack of backups for business-critical applications and documents.
  • Data saved in multiple locations instead of an easily accessible, centralised location.
  • Remote desktop access granted through insecure internet connections.
  • Compromised security set-up.

The Solution

Working against the backdrop of the global pandemic and within a restricted timeframe, Systima worked swiftly to migrate and set-up Mining One’s entire IT infrastructure. Security was upgraded with FortiGate firewalls and SSL VPN, mitigating the risk of security breach whilst allowing their workforce to continue to work remotely.

In this short period of time, Systima was able to:

  • Migrate servers to single Infrastructure as a Server (IaaS) hosting platform.
  • Migrate data to a centralised location with cloud backups using Datto SIRIS devices.
  • Implement a 24/7 IT Service Desk.
  • Set-up redundant internet links in both Melbourne and Perth Offices.
  • Upgrade security by implementing FortiGate firewalls and SSL VPN to allow staff to securely access data remotely.
  • Migrate to RingCentral phone system to allow all staff to use existing phones and soft phones to make calls.
  • Monitoring tools and advanced endpoint protection was installed on all Mining One computers and servers.
  • USB Anywhere set-up to access USB licenses remotely
